There are numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to a automated timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring for three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”
