Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Post Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" range.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the city showed an air quality index above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times above healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous haze that covers the capital as colder weather sets in.

Yet recently, the newly elected city administration appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the air has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the city is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, farmers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely mortalities each year in the capital.
