Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
