Pentagon Report Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
